Vocational Training for Employment and Professional Competency Certification

What is vocational training for employment?

It is the whole of educational courses with the mission of training and capacitating persons for employment and for updating their professional skills, knowledge and qualifications over the life of their career.

It is linked to the Ministry of Employment and Social Security, the Autonomous Communities, and, in our case, the Employment and Training Service of the Community of Valencia (SERVEF).

What are the professional competency certifications?

An instrument that officially accredits one's professional qualifications obtained through coursework or employment. It refers to the knowledge and skills required for exercising a given occupation and is structured into professional competencies.

Currently, 664 qualifications or Professional Competency Certifications exist, classified into 5 levels, though the courses for obtaining the Professional Competency Certificate includes up to level 3, and 26 professional families in the Catalogue of the National Institute of Professional Qualifications.

How are these obtained?

There are two ways for obtaining a Professional Competency Certificate:

  • Through courses for obtaining Professional Competency Certification offered by SERVEF, or public training centres or private, accredited training centres.
  • Through procedures for evaluating and accrediting professional competencies, when having work experience or informal training in the corresponding profession. These procedures are announced by the Generalitat Valenciana for certain professions throughout the year.

What access requirements exist?

There are minimum access requirements, depending on the level of the Professional Competency Certificate.

  • Level 1 certification: No prior academic title is required.
  • Level 2 certification: ESO degree.
  • Level 3 certification: Baccalaureate degree.

* It is important that SERVEF has knowledge of your level of education so that you will not be excluded, on the basis of your training, from the student selection processes for obtaining the Professional Competency Certificate. Check with the Dénia SERVEF office or the Autoservef self-interview section to verify the data registered with regards to your job demand.

* If you do not hold the required title/degree, you may take the Key Competencies test that determines whether or not you possess the necessary knowledge for participating in the courses.

What is the partial, cumulative accreditation?

This certification is issued to: those persons who, having participated in a Professional Competency Certification course, have not passed all of the course modules, or those persons who have completed courses that include only some of the modules or competency units of a Professional Competency Certification course but not the totality required for obtaining the certificate. In this case, the professional competencies acquired are accredited, though the Professional Competency Certification itself is not obtained.

Certification and validity

The National Employment Service (SEPE) or, when applicable, of the Autonomous Communities, are in charge of issuing the certificates or partial accreditations.

Its professional validity is official for Spain and in Europe through the Europass supplement.
